The first and probably most obvious thing to say about the Davenport area of Orlando is that it's within easy reach of all the city's major attractions. Just 10-15 minutes from Disney's world class themeparks and specially designed town of Celebration. Another 10 minutes from Universal Studios, International Drive, and Orlando's great shopping malls. Within an hour of Florida's golden beaches as well as both the Orlando airports, making it an ideal central location for everywhere you'd want to get to on an Orlando family holiday.
What's maybe not so well known about the Davenport area is it's natural beauty and abundance of interesting things to see and do. So it's also suitable for holidaymakers looking for something beyond the main tourist attractions. The quiet, peaceful community of Sunset Ridge is at the heart of this, nestling amongst citrus groves and conservation areas, close to lush golf courses and fishing lakes, and overlooking the most spectacular Florida sunrises and sunsets. The small town of Davenport sits a few miles along the highway from Sunset Ridge. This is a typical Florida community with its own culture and history, city hall and museum, homes and antique shops, churches and childrens' play areas.
There are numerous boating and fishing lakes in the Davenport/Lakeland area, such as Lake Marion and Lake Tohopekaliga. There's also several top class award-winning golf courses, such as Ridgewood Lakes and Southern Dunes. The latter sits in the small town of Haines City, where you can sample various shops and restaurants old and new. A short drive south takes you to Winter Haven, with its famous Cypress Gardens on the banks of Lake Eloise. Here you'll see water ski shows and the extrordinary botanical gardens. Driving on to the small town of Dundee you'll see an interesting flea market worth exploring, and in the charming National Historic District of Lake Wales there's an annual Mardi Gras every April. You should'nt miss a visit to the historical Boc Sanctuary with its impressive carillon tower, old country home, beautiful gardens and excellent visitor centre. And for contrast, try thrilling to a simulated flight experience at the Fantasy of Flight.
You wont run short of things to do in the Davenport area, whether it's a short stay or long stay you're planning. Ideal both for busy trips to the major attractions, or more leisurely breaks off the beaten track, or indeed a mix of the two.
